Jet 1000 has some quirks but gets the job done
I don't put alot of trust in reviews that come from people who have only used the product for a few days or weeks. Except for out-of-box quality comments, these reviews don't always tell the real story. I have used my Jet air filter daily for 12 months so this review describes a longer term experience with this product. During that time, I have had continuous furniture building activity in my garage woodshop...lots of sanding and fine finishing applications. I use the Jet filter to remove dust during sanding and to clean the air prior to spray painting. The unit is suspended from my 8' ceiling using eye bolts and "S" links and centered in my 20' by 20' shop. All my sanders (palm, sheet and belt) have dust filter attachments. As you probably already know, these filters are worthless. They clog quickly and just leave the dust on the work and in the air. Another option is to connect a shop vac to the sanders but the hose is always in the way and the suction makes moving the sander tiresome after long periods of use. So I have removed all these filters and let the sanders exhaust into the air. My Jet 1000 running at the low speed, does an amazing job of capturing all the airborne particles. It easily keeps up with my sanding activity no matter how long I work or what grade of abrasive I use. The heavier dust falls to the floor. By the way, I use compressed air to blow debris off the surface while I work. You can actually see it being drawn into the Jet filter as it gets agitated and nothing leaves the exhaust end of the filter. At low speed. the fan is very quiet and powerful. The secret to getting top performance from the Jet is to keep the pre-filter reasonably clean. I vacuum mine about twice a week. If you don't, the air flow through the filter gets somewhat restricted. When this happens, the powerful fan begins to suck air from around the edges and that causes the "blow-by" some of these reviewers have mentioned.

When I'm ready to paint, I vacuum the floor and benches. With the garage door open, I go through the whole shop with a leaf blower to clear areas missed by the vacuum and agitate any fine dust left behind. Then I close the door, install a fresh pre-filter and turn the Jet 1000 to the highest setting. At this speed, the total shop air volume is being cleaned about 5 times an hour. An easy way to check the air quality is to go to a window where beams of sunlight are coming in. If there is dust in the air, you'll see it. No sun today? Turn off the lights and shine a bright flashlight with a focused beam. Let the Jet 1000 run until you don't see any dust particles in the light beam. For me, this is usually about an hour. Wipe down the work piece with a tack cloth and you're ready to paint. If you are brushing the paint on, set the speed to medium and apply the finish. Let the filter run until the paint is tack free. You will be amazed at the dust free finish. If you are spraying, TURN THE UNIT OFF! Spray on the finish and then wait a few minutes for the overspray to settle. Then turn the unit back to medium speed and let dry. Do not run the filter while spraying...it could cause an explosion with oil based paints and will ruin the filters no matter what kind of paint is used.

So here is the bottom line on the Jet AFS-1000B: Excellent filtration at all speeds keeps the air breathable and allows a flawless finished paint job with very little final sanding/polishing. Quiet except at high speed. Fibration free. No blo-by if filters are maintained. Easy to install.

Now for the quirks. The unit uses a remote control that gets interference from high output flourescent bulbs. (the 55 watt jobs). If you use regular output fixtures, it works fine but the high output bulbs cause the remote to go nuts...nothing works except "On". You either have to turn the lights off or use the manualJET 708620B AFS-1000B 550/702/1044 CFM 3-Speed Air Filtration System with Remote and Electrostatic Pre-Filter controls on the back of the unit. The unit has a handy timer function but the function has a glitch. If you set the timer for 1 hour and then manually shut the unit off before the hour is up, the timer setting will stay on the next time you use the unit. So the next time you turn it on with no timer setting, it still shuts off in an hour. I advise you use the disposable filters. The washable ones are expensive and not really washable. Just vacuum the cheapo filters once in a while and replace them according to how often you use the unit. If it weren't for these quirks, I would have given the unit 5 stars because it works great.

A must for your woodshop.
My current workshop is in my basement; I needed to keep my work environment as healthy as possible. An air cleaner is one part of that equation.

I wanted to purchase a unit made by a competing company but no one in my local area stocked it and trying to tweak my travel-heavy work schedule with a local frieght delivery wasn't going to work. I found this unit at my local Rocklers.

I was hesitant about getting the Jet unit because of the number of gripes regarding the remote not working with flourescent lighting and the supposed proprietary sizing on the filters. I hung my unit from the ceiling right next to, and in between, two four-bulb flush mount suspended ceiling light fitures. The remote works just fine and also works without having to be in line-of-sight of the units control panel. The opening for the filter measures 23 3/4 inches by 11 3/4 inches and I was able to find 12x24x1 3M electrostatic filters that will fit just fine ...they actually fit better (more snugly) than the loose-sized Jet filters. I bought the Jet washable filter ($50) when I picked up the unit because I thought this would be my only long term option outside of buying the expensive OEM Jet filters; I plan to return it as the hassle of washing the filter media (which looks just like the stuff in the throw-away filters) is not worth the cost.

If you're going to hang the unit you'll be frustrated by the fact the eye bolts are spaced 15 inches apart, an inch shy of the standard 16 inch centerline of most ceiling joists. If you're going to hang this unit without help, remove the blower and control panel as it makes the unit much lighter and evenly weighted (it's very easy to do and requires a phillps head and an allen wrench). It would be prudent, given the units contol panel electronics, to purchase a surge protector for it. I haven't read the wording of the warranty but I would bet it does not cover electrical surges.

All these filter units are very simple pieces of equipment; a box with a furnace blower in it an some filters. They are all made in Taiwan and they all work the same way. I gave marginal points off on this unit for two reasons: the 15 inch spacing on the mounting eye-bolts and the fact it has only a 1 year warranty (the competing unit I looked to get had a 5 year warranty ...but then it also cost $100 more).

Jet AFS 1000B Air Filtration System with Remote?????
My Jet Air Filtration System greatly improved the air quality in my shop but it can't be operated by the remote control unless I turn off the fluorescent lights. I contacted the manufacturers customer service and was told that the remote doesn't always operate with a fluorescent lighting system which proved correct. Don't most shops use fluorescent lights? My shop has a eight foot ceiling so I can reach the controls without a ladder but I am unable to set the operating time unless I turn off the lights and use the remote.

Jet AFS-1000B Air Filtration
Well this is one nice unit and it works perfectly. I have been using it for six months. Now I don't mean to be insulting, but the issues with the florecent lights and the "standard" 12 x 24 filters just don't exist. I have a 20 x 30 shop with TEN double tube, 4ft industrial lights in the ceiling. The remote works even when pointed at the back of the unit. Maybe try fresh batteries? As for the filters, just think a little. You will notice the filter end of the unit is slightly "puckered" inward. With minimal pressure using my thumbs and fingers, I bent the opening so it was straight and square. Standard 12 x 24 Home Depot 3M filters fit right in, no problem. They happen to be 1/4 in smaller than all other brands. By the way the four rivets around the rim that seem to be doing nothing, are doing nothing, except making filter changes harder. remove them. Piece of cake. I also bought a sheet of green electrostatic filter material at Home Depot and placed that just behind my $8.00 outer filter. In my twenty-three years building custom cabinets I have found you have to think a little to solve simple problems. Great unit, works well and you will be a lot healthier for it. What Took Me So Long?
My shop is an attatched two car garage sans cars, that looked so spacious prior to cramming it with tools and work benchs. I never considered dust collection. When I realized I needed it, there was scant room. So the Jet AFS-1000B was an excellent solution.

It mounts to the ceiling and plugs right into the outlet with the garage door opener. There is no assembly. You will have to buy your own hardware for mounting. I installed it by myself. I can't say it was an easy task as it weighs 56 pounds and is an awkward 18x24x12". I finally hung four long chains from I-bolts and moved it to the top with "S" links four or five links at a time. It took me about 3 hours that included finding the rafters in my finished ceiling with a Black and Decker stud finder that thinks even I'm a stud, ergo a few test drillings, and a second trip to the hardware store for more chain. But there was no wrenched back, no blood, no panting, and very little swearing, and I can swear a lot.

It got its first test when I ran about 12 board feet of reclaimed cyprus through my planer. I was impressed. Normally my glasses would have been covered in dust, I had just a few specks. I did find a drawback on the first run; I couldn't find the remote. Like many new electronic devices, there are no external controls on the unit, so don't misplace it. On the plus side the remote will work from any angle. You don't have to be facing the front to make it work. It will even change speeds tucked in my shirt pocket.

I plugged it into a "Kill-A-Watt" electricity monitor and found the 1/5 HP motor pulled 2.33 amps on low speed, 2.49 amps on medium, and 3.30 on high. That equates to about 9.6 kw/h per month if you ran it 24/7 on high. I think that's reasonable. At least it doesn't pop a breaker when I start a table saw. It does dim a flourecent light, but it did that before the Jet AFB-1000B. (A wiring project is on my list.)

All-in-all I concur with many of the reviews I've read here. This is an excellent product that performs as advertised.
